Things to Do in Skagit County

Build the day around one good outdoor plan instead of racing through a checklist. Start with a nearby lake, then leave room for downtown Mount Vernon, the Anacortes waterfront, or a scenic drive through the valley.

Choose the water first

Skagit County stretches from valley towns to saltwater and the North Cascades, so trying to cover everything in one outing usually means spending the day in the car. A better approach is to choose one lake as the anchor. Our pickup rack is in Sedro-Woolley; the board goes in your vehicle, and the launch you choose determines what fits naturally before or after the paddle.

This setup is an easy add-on for a day coming from Mount Vernon, Burlington, Clear Lake, Big Lake, Anacortes, Bellingham: reserve the rental window first, then choose the rest of the route around it.

Five directions from the Sedro-Woolley rack

Drive times below are approximate and start at the rental rack, not your hotel or the center of town. Check the managing agency's access rules and current water advisories before leaving.

  • Clear Lake (5 min): Small and quiet, right next door, great for a first paddle.
  • Big Lake (10 min): Wide, calm water and an easy public launch. The local favorite.
  • Lake Samish (25 min): Mellow country paddling with a public park on the north shore.
  • Lake Whatcom (35 min): Big open water up toward Bellingham when you want room to roam.
  • Lake Padden (40 min): No motorboats, so the water stays glassy.

How much driving belongs in your day?

  • Keep it close: Clear Lake and Big Lake leave the most rental time for the water and the least for transporting the board.
  • Make the drive part of it: Lake Samish adds a country route north while keeping the round trip manageable.
  • Build a Bellingham-area day: Lake Whatcom and Lake Padden are farther from the rack, so choose a longer rental and budget for both drives.

Rental choices currently include 5-hour paddle, 8-hour cruise, full day , starting at $65. The rental clock covers pickup, travel, setup, paddling, and returning the kit to Sedro-Woolley.

Give the rest of the day a shape

  1. Lake plus Mount Vernon: choose nearby Big Lake or Clear Lake, return the gear in Sedro-Woolley, then head to downtown Mount Vernon for a walk and a meal.
  2. Water before the waterfront: paddle close to the rack early, then drive west toward Anacortes after the rental is returned. This keeps a wet board and a return deadline out of the second half of the day.
  3. A northbound outing: make Lake Samish the activity and continue toward Chuckanut or Bellingham afterward. Pick a session with enough travel margin instead of trying to squeeze the drive into a short slot.

Keep a weather-proof backup

Conditions do not always cooperate with a water day. Skagit also has trails, beaches, parks, wildlife viewing, and scenic routes, so save a land-based option before you set out. The official regional visitor site maintains a broader collection of current park and recreation ideas.
