What a paddle day from Bellingham actually looks like
Bellingham has good paddling water of its own. Lake Padden bans motorboats outright, which keeps the surface flat all day, and Lake Whatcom gives you serious room once you are out past the narrows. Lake Samish sits between town and the valley with a public park on the north shore.
What Bellingham does not have is our rack, which is about 35 minutes south — I-5 down to Burlington, then SR-20 east into Sedro-Woolley. That geography actually works in your favour on the way back north: Lake Samish is about 25 minutes from the rack and Lake Padden about 40, so you can collect a board and paddle closer to home rather than doubling back into Skagit County.
Because pickup and return are both at the rack, plan the drive twice. A whole-day rental is the easy answer from Bellingham: keep the board overnight and return it by midday the next day, which turns a long round trip into two short ones.
